The Final Jump

The Final Jump.
By Lara.
Slow, that was the word rushing through my breathing as I locked my eyesight onto the corner of the arena. I was bracing myself for the final and biggest jump in the show jumping competition. All my weight was pushed down into my heels, causing my toes to point to the sky. Eventually I came to the corner cone and turned my horse using one rein. All was silent, even a single whisper could break the suspense that was rapidly building itself up.
My sight was clear as I came in line with the jump, all the hope possible was fluttering around in my throat as I listened to the faint padding noise of my horse’s hooves beating along the sandy arena floor. I gazed upon the bars, staring them down without intimidation. My heels tapped at my horse’s sides, easing him from a collected trot to a steady canter. It was time and the jump was inches away from us. With my heels down and back straight I leaned forward slightly and rested my hands inches up my horses soft mane making me look like a tilted branch.

Before I knew it we were off. My horse launched himself off the ground and flew over the bars, wind danced through my hair as we cleared the jump perfectly. For a steady landing I pushed my lower legs forward slightly and slowed my horse down to a halt as the crowd cheered and clapped at our wonderful performance.

The competition and our performance was stunning, and something I will be proud of for many years.

Winter Haiku

My breath shows outside,

In the midst of loneliness

The cabin light shines.

The Zoo Trip

It was a bright sunny Wednesday morning. Our class was going on a zoo trip. We had earned this zoo trip because we were being good kids all year and got all the marbles in the jar.
Once we arrived, we split up into our groups. My group had five people in it, including me. My mum had transported us to the zoo and she was going to be the group leader.
Once we entered, we saw quite a lot of people and a few other schools, as well. I looked down at the map and thought to myself where we could go first.
“Hmm,” I said, as I scanned the map from top to bottom. Finally, I came up with a small route we could take first. I showed Mum the route I had planned and told her I would add more on soon. We then headed in the direction of the Weka Walk.
Opening one door at a time, we entered the walkway.  We walked along the path and Kaka.JPG saw quite a lot of birds walking around and flying above us. We finally came to the exit so we decided to leave. I looked along the path, looking for the sign that pointed to the red pandas.
“There it is!” I said, as I pointed to the sign.
Once we got there, I saw a fuzzy red panda with a long tail and big brown eyes. It was sitting and eating in a little hut that was supported by a sturdy wooden pole. DSC00787.JPG
“Its so cute!” We all said one by one.
It took a while for us to stop watching the red pandas but finally we decided to head back and look around for the other animals.
I looked at the map as we walked around, trying to find the last few animals we had to see.
“Ok, straight forward is the savannah. Keep going,” I said, as we walked down the hill.
We made it down and the first things we saw, were the tall spotty giraffes that practically towered over us. I looked around at the other animals in the enclosure, like zebras,Giraffes.JPG emus and cantaloupe. In the cage beside it, there were two types of animals - deer and a type of bison. Once we were finished looking at the animals, we headed back up to the cafe for lunch.
We arrived at the cafe with our bags. We found a spare table and sat down after our long walk and ate our lunch. Just as we finished our lunch, it was our turn to go into the Education Classroom. We met up with the rest of the groups and lined up outside the classroom.
Once we were alllowed to go in, a nice man, named Matt, came out to greet us. He led us in. He told us to sit on the mat and said that, after we had talked and asked our questions, we could have a good look around the classroom.
We saw lots of animals that used to be alive a long time ago. We saw turtle shells, some animal hide, a lot of reptiles like a live lizard and an Axolotl. I touched some animal skulls like a horse skull and a gorilla skull down to a fake human skull.
After we had our look around, it was time to head back to school. We got into our travel groups and hopped into our cars. We drove all the way back to school. Luckily, it was the end of the day so we just had to put our booklets back on our desks. We waited a little while for the bell to ring so we could go home. Finally, when the bell, rang my mum and I headed home.
That was the best zoo trip I have ever been on. I hope we get to do it again sometime.
